Task 2: Visualisation and brief

If I were to make a video for this I would possibly have the video a delicate video a very sad to go with the song. So I would her singing and playing the piano like in her picture as well as showing two photos of whoever it is she is singing about one being either when they were children or in school and the other being a single picture of the person on their own in uniform so that it looks like she’s sing to them and shows she is reflecting on the past and wants it back.

We could have flashes on different peoples lives like having parents sitting on a swing chair with two photographs one of their son when he was young the other a current photo of him and a letter from their son they could be looking upset or lonely, you could have siblings preferably a older brother and younger sister messing around throwing pillows/ playing in the garden the every thing could slow down and you see the brother walking off into a light, a newly wed couple cuddling but the husband would also leave after a kiss on the forehead to his wife and also maybe put in a father and children (baby boy and young girl) father cuddling the family and goes to walk away the baby boy could start crying as well as the mother almost at tears but the young daughter could be pulling on her fathers hand and clothes to pull him back in the house but the father would still have to leave.

For the end it would probably be best to show her story or her view so we could show the person she is singing about spending time with her and then leaving her to so that the video doesn’t sound like she’s singing about just herself (although she is singing about some in her life) it will also help people realise that things happen to everyone not just me or you and that life can be hard for everyone.

I recently discovered that the song is about her brother at war in Afghanistan who was lucky to return home. so what you could do after showing her story you could show either everyone coming back or have some of them coming back and others not to just also put across that we are lucky to have the people we love in our lives.

Task 1 correction

Whilst doing Task 2: Visualisation I found out that the song is about her brother who went to war in Afghanistan. After finding this out I remember that I know song that are of war and are based on war.
61irsdPrSgL._SL290_.jpgI know of two bands who have sung about war the first is actually a band called five finger death punch who are a metal/ hard rock band. They have made one album called 'war is the answer'  which looks like this  ------------>
The band have actually traveled out to Afghanistan and performed for the soldiers, one song from the album that really stands out to me is far from home.

The next band is rise against they to have written a song on the war in Afghanistan. I'm not to sure if their album 'appeal to reason' is entirely about war but I do know that the song 'hero of war' is about the battle in Afghanistan because I went to one of their gigs in london brixton o2 arena 21/11/09 Tim the lead singer even said that we shouldn't be sending people to war over resources. below are two video's of this song one was the gig i was at the other is the official music vid.

live 21/11/09 london.

Jazz Morley: Disconnected

Task 1

When listening to the song I found it very slow and mellow possibly almost sad.
When listening to the lyrics it’s obviously about someone she cares about and seems to have been with a long time. Going by the lyrics the song seems to be based on how everyone changes through life and that we all end up going our different ways whether it is because of work or other reasons. She’s also trying to say by the sounds of it don’t forget the good times and can we one day go back to them.

Does it sound similar to anything else I have ever heard? No personally I find it a bit to heavy on the heart and isn’t my cup of tea lyric wise I would say you maybe able to relate the way she thinks probably to pink in her time of reflection. It seems that Jazz Morley is of course different in her music but she was obviously very upset alone and possibly a bit depressed. The genre I would possibly relate to more of a mellow indie/emo type of genre.

Sound Analysis on Thor 2011 Film

I was asked to do a presentation of a sound analysis on a film of my choice. I paired up with Molly from my group and together we were trying to decided if we wanted to do pirates of the Caribbean: on stranger tides or Thor.

We felt that if we were to do pirates of the caribbean we would used the opening scene where captain jack is escaping arrest as our five minute sound analysis in the end we choose to do Thor and decided our five minute sound analysis should be on the battle between Thor and the frost giants.

We choose this purely because there are so many different sounds going on in the scene compared to pirates of the caribbean mainly because their are more character's with different abilities which was more course for different sounds.

I think the presentation went well although it was a little tricky as I found my self repeating over some areas at lest twice. I do believe that I may need to improve more on my presenting skills as well as my pitching skills but overall I feel I did well being there were slight complications in the morning like forgetting the DVD.

I have tried to upload my presentation onto slide-share, although for some unknown reason it wont upload but I will be uploading it at a later date.

Glossary

Diegetic
This is also known as actual sound and means sound that is relevant to the film you are watching for example:
  •   Voices of the characters
  •   Sounds made by objects in the story
  •   Music that could be played on or off screen for example the radio, an instrument or television
Diegetic just means that it is sound you would naturally hear but with an added benefit of music to set the mood in the film. The diegetic sound can be either on or off the screen depending on what is going on in or out of the screen frame for example someone loading a gun behind someone but you don’t see the gun.

Non-diegetic
This is also known as commentary sound. This means sound that isn’t really seen on screen and may not be relevant to the area of the film for example:
  •   Narrator’s commentary
  •   Sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect
  •   Mood music i.e. thriller film scary music.

Ambient
This can also is known as background noise, which is what ambient sound is. It is normally recorded background noise; which could be for example outside noise, a coffee shop, business office ECT…

SFX
This stands for three different types of effects these are special effects (visual animations), stage effects (lighting and big stage screens) and sound effects a good example of what a sound effect is; is that the sound effect is commonly used to create a dramatic feel to a scene this can be seen in things like a slow motion bullet noise.

Mood
What mood has the sound made you feel for example happy, sad, nervous, tense, scared …

Tone
This can mainly be how smooth the sound is for example is it loud, quite, fast or slow.

Genre
This is mainly the label or category that the movie is put into such as horror, thriller, romance, comedy and so on.

Theme
This can vary with the theme music played at the beginning of a program for example Eastenders, Emerdale, Family Guy, the Simpsons… or the character’s in a film for example batman, superman, Indiana jones and so on.

Music
This would be the music that would mostly likely been created by an orchestra and the composer to set the moods in the film/television program.

Voiceover
This is a recorded voice that is placed over the film. It doesn’t always have to be someone included in the shot but sometimes it can be.

Musical score
This normally depends on the film but this is known as music sheets. They would have been used for example if the film was a musical or if the music in the film is created by a music writer it would then have been written out and copied to give to a composer and the orchestra

Synchronous sound
This is sound that is synchronized or matches what is being seen on screen. For example if someone is playing an instrument the sound is projected or made louder.

Asynchronous sound
This is the sound of something that we can’t see on the screen for example a loading gun from someone who’s hiding.

Contrapuntal
This can mean general movement of a character in a film. Where two sounds would complement each other.

Silence
Literally just main no sound you can often find this in thriller sometimes before a jumpy scene or when there is something important in a film.

Selective sound
This basically mains the producers have had more control on the sound management. For instance when you end up watching the film you will hear what post production wants you to hear. It’s also easily indicated by background sounds like cafes or restaurants for example the character could be listening a conversation slightly.

Sound bridges
This is a sound that can be used to ease the transitions between shots in a scene.
